Listen, I am not a big fan of most of the hokey-ass traditions that are done at weddings. But the Daddy/Daughter Dance. I. Am. So. There. Love that shit. Image Courtesy of: Digital Protalk Skip the bouquet toss (ugh.), nix the reception line (so long and so boring), and blow off the champagne toast (pricey and most everyone only drinks a sip) but for the love of God/Allah/Jennifer Love Hewitt - save the dance! There is just something about this tradition that is all sweetness and some of the weddings best photos come from it. If embarrassed to dance an entire song with just you and dad - try this twist on the old tradition. About a minute into the song, have the announcer invite all daddies and daughters out on the dance floor. It makes for a really fun and lovely moment.

Filled with great recipes, decor ideas, financial advice, and relationship articles - this magazine is a great investment for the modern (and newly) married couple. I love flowers. Really, truly adore them (I think that has a lot to do with growing up in Alaska and only having flowers for a few short months every year). And nothing says "wedding" like a lovely floral centerpiece. But, what if you don't like flowers or are allergic or you're on a super duper tight budget and can't afford them? How 'bout this? A great way to save in the wedding budget is to trim down the bar. Do not do a cash bar. I repeat. DO NOT DO A CASH BAR. It is tacky - would you ever host a party and ask people to bring their own beverage? No? Well, don't do it at your wedding either. Plan for the drinking but make effective choices with the offerings and keep the bar budget managable. The easiest way to accomplish this is by limiting the selections. One red wine, one white, two beers (one light and one regular), and one cocktail.* Estimate the set amount each person will drink, buy that amount, and (if it runs out) have the bartender make a tactful excuse ("safety first!") and switch people to water or soda. Here's some good cocktail suggestions from Serious Eats: Strawberry Vanilla Agua Fresca: White Peach Summer Bellini: Bottega's Limoncello: Raspberry Margarita: *Remember your non-alcoholic drinkers and provide water, soda, and a virgin option of the cocktail.

Printing: Gettin' it Done

One of the best ways to save money is to create and print your own wedding paper goods (see an excellent downloadable paper goods timeline here). The actual creating is as economical as it gets. Just your time + Photoshop or an inexpensive PFD file purchased from etsy. But, as you well know, there is always a catch. Printing from home seems cheap but, in reality, is quite expensive! Getting married is awesome. Getting gifts is the best. Writing endless thank you notes is not. But you gotta. You must, must, must write those notes. I am all about being lazy and bucking tradition but saying thank you (and no, it does not need to be sincere...only sound like it) is one of those things that makes society function. Each section also features information on various organizational systems to incorporate into each room (+ suggestions on why they would work for you). However, some of my bridesmaids are short and want to have at least a small heel. I'm having a hard time finding shoes that will go with this dress and be comfortable enough to walk on uneven ground but not so casual that they look dumb walking down the aisle. Our colors are green and brown, and I was thinking of gold or brown shoes, not shoes dyed green. I would never wear green shoes again, so I don't expect them to buy them. Target Merona Collection Yon Heeled Sandals in Gold - $29.99. A more casual gold heel - isn't the flower medallion thingy great? *5. Target Mossimo Halle Glitter Sandals in Bronze - $17.99. Ah, the classic kitten heel (it listed right up there with the pump as one of the most wearable shoes ever) and the deep bronze color enhances the green of the dress. *6. Stylux Pointed Toe Kitten Heel - $14.99 (available via Amazon). Another version of the sexy kitten heel. This one is closed toe and comes in several colors - try brown, bronze, or gunmetal. Donations. This sounds weird but people actually love seeing that you donated money to an important cause on their behalf. It's charity without the work.
Containers. Vases, baskets, pots. These are useful and people love them...especially when filled with candy (see: #1).
Stationary. In this electronic communication age, a set of notecards or a notepad is a sweet nod to a more nostalgic time - one that everyone loves to think that they could still be a part of.

DIY: Create your own Crate and Barrel Napkin Ring Knock-Off

As promised, here are the cute Crate and Barrel knock-off napkin rings that I made: And here are the step-by-step instructions: Steps One - Three: 1. Remove plastic stem from flower (it pulls right out) and flip it over. 2. Use your hand to hold back the petals. 3. Remove the plastic base from the stem. Steps Four - Five: 4. Use scissors or wire cutters to snip the stem off (as close as possible to the petals). 5. Using a glue gun (or a Glue Dot), adhere some adhesive right on top of the clipped stem. Steps Six - Eight: 6. Adhere a hair elastic to the adhesive. 7. Using more glue adhesive, adhere the plastic base over the hair elastic (or, nix the plastic base, and adhere a felt square). 8. Slip the napkin ring over a cloth napkin and enjoy! Tough-o-Meter: Can watch Spurs' Rodeo Road Trip and still make it come out cute (and the Spurs kick some serious basketball butt!)! Edited to add: The total cost this project was $.26. Yep, that is not a typo - each napkin ring came to $.26 a piece. I got the flowers from the clearance bin at Michael's ($1.00 a stem and each stem had 4 flowers). The ring part is a simple hair elastic from Goody. I found similiar at the dollar store and they were 100 for $1.00. So: $.25 a flower + $.01 for each elastic = $.26 a piece. And that beats the crap out of C&B's $2.95!

Simply Cute: Guest Welcome Baskets

One of the greatest way to add a little something special to your wedding is to greet your out-of-town guests with welcome baskets. Whether at the airport, in a hospitality suite, or in each hotel rooms - a welcome basket is a nice way to say "Hey, thanks for joining us!". However cute welcome baskets are, you need to realize that they are just an added expense...so if the budget is already stretched thin, nix these. But! If you can find room for a few more bucks, a welcome basket is awesome and can be done well for very little money. The easiest way? Pick a theme. A breakfast theme is really cute and a nice way to leave a little something the morning after your guests arrive (or even the morning after the wedding!). Keep costs down by keeping it simple. There's no need for a million bits and pieces - just a few well chosen items can go a long way to making your guests feel welcome! To create this one your own: - (2) Inexpensive Mugs. I got mine for $.50 a piece at Big Lots but here's a really cute red glass mug from Ikea for $1.49 each. - (2) Water Bottles. Remember, some people prefer water to coffee in the morning! Buy the cheapest, most generic water bottles at your local grocery store. Then create some simple labels (mine read: "Thank You for Joining Us!") in Photoshop and applied them with double-sided tape. Don't have Photoshop? Use Word...it can do it just as easily. - (2) Sour Cream Coffee Cake Muffins. So, so simple to bake and the ingredients are probably in your kitchen already! This recipe is tasty and only takes 35-45 minutes tops (24 muffins at a time). Slip 2 muffins in a cellophane bag and staple shut (with a gift tag made in Photoshop or Word). - (1) Jar of Cocoa. Just another fun beverage option for your guests! I dumped a bunch of generic brand cocoa into a clean jelly jar and affixed one of these labels (use Photoshop to remove the "Happy Holidays" part or just recreate on your own) using double-sided tape. And instead of a bag, I opted to use a cute bag that I made out of some leftover fabric scraps and old pillowcases. Alter the size as needed and use up those old shirts and quilt scraps! The best part is that your guests can use the bag as a sightseeing tote on their trips around town.

Save Money: Think Small

One of the easiest ways to save money when putting together a wedding is to think smaller. Smaller wedding party (fewer gifts, fewer must invite dates). Smaller bar (nix the full bar and stick to one cocktail and a single red and/or white wine). Smaller guest list (smaller food budget, smaller favor budget, and hell, you can't stand your co-workers so why invite them!). One of my very favorite ways to trim the budget is to think smaller when it comes to the food. No, no. I'm not talking about those silly wee bits that they serve at those awful fancy schmancy French foodie places - I'm talking real food but smaller portions. Generally, a sit-down dinner at a wedding consists of a salad course, an entree course, and dessert. Taking care of dessert is easy - wedding cake...boom! You're done. As for entree, this is really not the place to skimp on portions - you don't have to go overboard. just provide a decent serving. The real place to save is the salad! Salads can easily be served on small plates (even small than the standard salad plate) and still look filling. It's all about the careful arrangement of the "weeds" (as my dad calls anything other than iceberg lettuce). For example, I created three different salad arrangements (all using the same basic tableware foundation). Laaast Pooost ooof thhhheeee week week week week. Ahem. So, this is the much maligned favor box: and the blah tablescape: And this is what I created from it: Hee. Very young and fresh. To begin, I laid some pink tulle (purchased at Wal-Mart for $1.29 a yard) over the linen "tablecloth". Next, I added a table runner made from a length of Michael Miller fabric.

I created a napkin from a piece of Robert Kaufman fabric and laid the favor box on top of it.

To create the floral favor box, I attached a large pink peony on top ($1.00 from the Michael's clearance bins). Last, I attached a cute houndstooth "place card" tag from everyjotandtittle (write or type in each guest's name for a really personal touch!).

Lately, I've been having a real thing for the color orange. So is it any surprise that I made a little tablescape using this week's blah favor box? So this: and this: Became this bright and sunny reception table: Very simple to do. I made a table runner/placemats (great for rectangular tables) from a few yards of Valori Wells for Free Spirit fabric (find it on ebay or etsy). Then I cut a few napkin sized squares from some fun fabric (this one, from JoAnn's, would also work) and bunched one end together. The altered favor box was accomplished in a few easy steps. First, I wrapped the box in some ribbon from Maya Road (this particular ribbon is discontinued but try looking on ebay or etsy). On top of that, I layered a plain white circle tag from Office Max and a pink ghost flower from Heidi Swapp (look on ebay or try these clear ones).

Today's blah favor box alteration (see this post for what the hell I'm talking about) is: That was created from this: and this: But how? First, I draped some white tulle over the linen "tablecloth" (find tulle at Wal-Mart or JoAnn's for around $1.29 a yard). Then I laid some black grosgrain ribbon back and forth on top of the tulle (purchased at Michael's - from the $1.00 ribbon bin). Next I gently bunched a simple white napkin (try these from Ikea) together in the center and secured it with the favor box's original black ribbon. As a finishing touch, I laid a white silk peony on top (purchased for 1/2 off at Michael's). The favor box got a very simple dressing up. I achieved the look of a wide piece of black ribbon by triple wrapping the box (and overlapping the edges of the ribbon) with some cheap black grosgrain ribbon from...where? The $1.00 ribbon bin at Michael's. I finished the classic look with a cute girl tag from everyjotandtittle. I love the idea of have girl tags for the ladies and boy tags for the men!

This week I am experimenting with turning one blah favor from a big box craft store into 5 different "wow" worthy reception favors (see yesterday's post for more details). Here's today's variation: This favor: And this place setting: Can easily become this: I created a runner that doubles as a place mat (this technique is great for long rectangular tables) from yardage that I got at Ikea ($6.99 a yard). I then made a napkin from some cute Amy Butler fabric that I bought at JoAnn's with a 40% off coupon - also try ebay or etsy. I altered the favor box by loosely tying a length of Maya Road ribbon (unfortunately, this ribbon is discountinued but troll etsy or ebay for some because they are occassionally listed). I then tucked a small "thank you" tag (what a cute way to literally thank your guests for joining you on your special day!) under the ribbon - find your tags at everyjotandtittle.

Back inTexas after a three month long trip home to Alaska...getting back in the blogging groove. While I was there, I took a little stroll around the local Michael's bridal aisle. And I found this: It's a favor in a box (shaped soaps) and it was on clearance for .99. Granted, it's just as cheap and tacky as it look but hell! It's on sale! I just knew that I could do something with it. But what? So the experiment began - one favor. five ways. in one week. I'd start with a basic place setting: Linen fabric ($1.99 a yard at Hancock Fabrics), white plates from Ikea ($3.99 and $2.99 a piece), and some old silverware that I already had. Those elements + some bits and inexpensive bobs and I will show you 5 different ways to alter a little black and white box into a cool wedding ready favor. This is a fun table setting that centers around the colorful fabric in this yardage that I found on etsy. Just using pinking shears (if you are a non-sewer) or cut and hem the edges (if you are a sewer) to turn the yardage into individual cloth napkins. I used the original black ribbon from the favor box to create a simple "napkin ring" for the napkin. I also added a simple runner to the table. It is just one yard of fabric (Amy Butler - available on ebay or etsy) that I draped over the linen fabric. To alter the favor box, I simply selected some wide green satin ribbon and some narrow pink ribbon from the $1.00 ribbon bin at Michael's. I wrapped the green ribbon around the favor box and trimmed it about 1/2" longer than I needed - I used that extra length to adhere the ribbon to the box with double-sided tape. I then repeated the process with the pink ribbon. I completed the table setting with this cute tag from everyjotandtittle. Just think, instead of one large table number...you could do a table number on everyone at the table's place setting! Very cute.

DIY: No Sew Wedding Veil

Remember this post when I made a wedding cake out of a box? Well, I got a lot of feedback from it (mostly of the "OMGhowtackyareyouaweddingcakefromabox!?!?!") which resulted in a handful of people asking me for more LHC's created tutorials and how-tos. So! Today's post involves creating your own NO SEW wedding veil. It can be done and it can be awesome...and it can be inexpensive. Step One: Buy 3 yards of standard tulle (use coupons at local fabric stores for a real steal!) and fold it in half length-wise. Then fold it in half width-wise. Step Two: Locate the center of the fabric (it might be helpful to fold it in half width-wise again to find the "center mark"). Use your hand to loosely gather the material together. Step Three: Place the gathered material into an opened clip (keep the clip open). Step Four: Lay the fabric and the open side of the clip on top of the area where you want the veil (in this case, I did it at front of the head about 5"back from the forehead). Now, just clip the hair clip to the hair as you normally would but remember to also clip the fabric at the same time (the layer should be: scalp/hair, bottom of clip, hair, fabric, top of clip). Step Five: Use scissors to trim the bottom of the veil into the desired shape and also to cut along the folds of the fabric (and make them individual layers). Flip the top layer over (if desired) and walk the crap out of that aisle!

DIY: Candy Bag Favor

Take a page from Amy Atlas's book and create bags of candy (pinned to a fabric covered board) for a unique (and considerably cheaper) spin on the now-traditional candy buffet. Photo Courtesy of: Martha Stewart Here's How: - Choose a single color and purchase bulk candies in every shade. - Fill cellophane bags about 2/3s full with a single type of candy. - Secure the bag shut with a circle label sticker (in the same color shade) by attaching half the circle to one side of the bag's top and folding the other side over the opposite. - Staple shut right over the label. - Use a fabric pin to secure the bag of candy to the fabric covered board (make sure to pin it through the label for optimum reinforcement). -Enjoy! Tough-O-Meter: Can palm this job off on your junior bridesmaid, go holiday shopping, and still have it come out cute!

DIY: Kraft Gift Box Style Favor

Another post and another chic and cheap version (and how-to) for replicating those great "as seen in a magazine" favors. This one is so lovely and can be filled with any number of fun bits-n-pieces (like: candies, beads, soap, pictures, cards, personalized notes, etc.). Photo Courtesy of: Martha Stewart To do on your own: - Purchase small kraft jewelry boxes and fill with your selected favor. - Cut a solid colored fabric band to fit around your box. It should measure 1/3 the TOTAL size of the box in width and be 1" longer in length. - Cut a patterned fabric band that is 1/4" small in width that your solid colored band but the same length. - Use a glue stick or fabric glue to center and secure the wrong side (the side without a pattern) of your patterned fabric to the right side (the prettier colored side) of your solid colored fabric. Trim, if needed. - Layer the band on top of the center of your filled box and use double sided tape to secure the ends to the bottom of the box. - Use this tutorial and create a fabric rosette. - Us a Glue Dot to secure the rosette to top center of the fabric band. - Enjoy! Tough-O-Meter: Can easily enjoy the holiday classic "Nestor the Long-Eared Donkey" and still make it come out cute!

Replace the boxes lid and seal with the label. 5. Enjoy! Tough-o-Meter: Can sit through yet another cable showing of "Scrooged" and still make it come out cute!

Wedding Cake from a Box

I have been playing with the idea for a really long time. See, I am not a baker. I can cook really well - roasting, grilling, pasta, salads, soups. But I just cannot get the hang of baking. I think it has a lot to do with my low patience level. Anyway, when it came to trying to help my readers create a big wedding on a small budget - when it came to the cake, I was stumped. So, I started thinking. When I want a cake for something in my currant life - what do I do? Well, I either buy one from the store or I make it from a box. And you know what? I LIKE the box mix cakes. I think that they taste good (and preservatives) and they are really easy to make. So I wondered... Why couldn't someone make their entire wedding cake from a box mix?

Okay. I did the absolute most basic cake (a couple of layers, no fillings, no frosting decorations) but I still think it is lovely and contemporary. I followed this recipe to make the cake (it uses a box mix and several ingredients from the pantry to enhance them) and this one to help with the actual assembly of the tiers. I also use frosting from a can instead of homemade (use a combination of this method and this method for super easy application). I finished it off with ribbon and silk flowers (fresh would be great but this is rural Alaska and...no.). A few tips: 1. Do each tier separately. I mixed up a batch of 3 all at once and it was tricky. Stirring it was really hard and then the baking took forever and some of the tiers were a bit brown. Better to handle each one on it's own and then move on to the next. The great part? Each tier can be refrigerated for up to 2 days without sacrificing the quality. 2. Only fill each cake pan 2/3's full! Otherwise, your cake will resemble a puffy mushroom. 3. Make your first slices (or skins) while the cake is still in the pan - it provides a built in level! 4. Crumb cake layers are supposed to be super, super thin. Melt your frosting in the microwave (in 10-15 second increments) to get a smooth, thin consistency. 5. Use straws and cardboard to create the tiered levels. Super easy and super cheap! 6. Ribbon and flowers can hide a multitude of sins. Use a cotton swab to help secure the ribbon to the cake via extra frosting...and use cotton swabs to clean up the excess frosting that happens when you are adhering the ribbon to the cake!

Ten Tips for Affordable Cakes

Few things say "wedding" better than the wedding cake. And cake artists and professional pastry chefs know that - and make you pay because of it. Photo Courtesy of: Martha Stewart Take heart though. There are many, many tiny ways to have an actual (edible*) wedding cake but save a buttload of cash doing it. *What? You've never gotten the "frost styrofoam and fake the bottom two layers of cake" advice? 1. Just like with flowers and dress - the more time, labor, and materials used on a cake then the more expensive your bill will ultimately be. 2. And...just like with everything else in your wedding, if you trim the number of guests at your wedding then you will save on the number of slices of cake served. And that? Saves you money. 3. Give non-traditional cakes a chance. Tiers of cupcakes, a table covered with pies, or stabs of cheesecake cost less and are more memorable for your guests. 4. Take a pass on the fancy fondant icing - it is the worst tasting of all the frosting options and yet the most expensive. Dress up your cake with candies or flowers instead. 5. Take a cake course six to eight months before your wedding. Use your knowledge to make your own cake (ahead of time!). 6. Generally, cake prices are calculated more on the labor and materials cost than on the actual pieces used to dress it up. Ask if you can supply your own tiers, cake topper, and even flowers. Purchase yours on sale (or etsy or ebay) and save some dough (heh.). 7. Those shaped cakes are lovely but they come at a price. Even the square shaped ones cost more than the traditional round cake. 8. Keep an eye on your cost per slice. Even if you only serve half the cake, you get billed as if the entire thing was served! If you have to, remove a tier to keep costs down. 9. Try hiring a pastry student. Often, these are skilled artists willing to offer low, low prices just to build their portfolios. Or, try a local culinary school - call and ask if their pastry class needs a practice cake? Generally there is a small fee to cover the cost of materials. 10. Dress up a plain supermarket cake in a unique and memorable way. Buy plain white rounds in varying sizes and stack them (best for very short cakes) and wrap ribbon around the base of each. Sprinkle a store bought cake with colorful Necco wafers or edible glitter. Create colorful frosting spots and stick them to the prebought cake.
